Ribbon Bars on Allgemeine SS Uniforms

I was looking at some early period photos of men in Allgemeine SS uniforms, and noticed that some officers might have an Imperial Iron Cross or Equivalent city-state award on the left pocket, but no one had a ribbon bar or an Imperial Iron Cross 2nd Class ribbon in the buttonhole. I have seen several collector/reenactor references on the Internet which showed EK 2nd Class ribbons being worn both ways on the Allgemeine SS uniform, and was wondering if this was correct or not, or if the regs changed over time.

EK2 (1914) ribbons were often worn on the left pocket flap when the tunic had only four front buttons.

The usual EK front button (second from the top) would have been too low on these tunics.
