I didn't keep a note of the auction house - it was some place in France. When I looked at their other auctions going back to 2010 it was all antique furniture and sculptures and other stuff I was not interested in. Guess they don't do many poster auctions.....Comment

This is not exactly the right thread for this but it has a lot of members viewing it.
I have a question for everyone on a poster that I cannot figure out. A poster house has asked me to see if I can authenticate this but it's a tough one from just photos, although from the evidence so far it does not look good.
I'll list out the for and against reasons we have so far but maybe someone has seen this version somewhere else. It was sold by a well known dealer - if anyone knows who it is I would ask they keep it quiet at this point out of respect for all concerned.
Any help would be appreciated.

The poster house has done a microscope examination of the printing style and say it is not one that was used in the 1940's.
It has no white border with the SS Head Office printing details like other originals have.
the poster house also believes the paper is not from the 1940's.

Hi Tony,
a few veterans and sons of veterans in France have amazing collections of posters and documents about the Waffen-SS.
For example famous writer Jean Mabire (the one who wrote - or "rewrote" may i say... - "history" of various SS divisions - but also other units and not only from the Axis) worked with Eric Lefèvre who was his documentalist. Lefèvre is a son of a milician if i'm right, and he owns a lot of artefacts (including one of the very few SS jackets that survived the war - the one of M. Soulat, W-Rottenführer, translator at the "Charlemagne" Brigade headquarters). Lefèvre was able to have access to various documents to illustrate the famous trilogy (quadralogy may i say) about the French SS (Frankreich brigade, Charlemagne "Division", Sturmbatallion Berlin, Fight in Danzig). One of the guys that had some posters was René Bail, a veteran.
The three books Frankreich /Charlemagne / Berlin (the last one is a smaller one) were re-released over the years, each time with a different iconography. Some french posters are shown from various veterans or collectors on the various books.
I will try to have more infos on the various collections, but french collectors usually don't like to talk a lot ^_^
To my (recent) knowledge, i never saw an original H'o'ch with an other SS-Ersatzkommando address on it. The Nancy poster (pictured in a few books, including the one on the SS-Ausbildungslager Sennheim by JL Liandier / Mounine) seemed to be quite good, and in the possession of a veteran.
But you are right, we need more evidence. It is always possible that the owner was sold a fake between 1945 and 1974-75 (date of publication of the Mabire's books).
Here are the french SS posters (wih french text) i know of :
- Anton / SS + tarnjacke pointing his finger / "Toi aussi !"
- Anton / 2 SS men + tarnjacke + MP40 / "Coude à coude"
- Anton / SS man + worker / "La Waffen-SS t'appelle"
- ?? (don't remember) / SS parade march / "Sous le signe SS tu vaincras !"
- Anton / Panzer IV / "Si tu veux que la France vive"
- ?? / Young SS without helmet + tarnjacke / "Engage toi" (small poster)
- H'o'ch / SS with cap / at least one with Nancy address ???
- ?? / informative poster / "Des volontaires SS de race germanique" - probably not for France but Belgium ? The translation in french is really poor... Done by a flemish SS ?
- 3 french booklets
* "Unités Françaises de la Waffen-SS"
* "La SS t'appelle"
* speech of Degrelle in Paris 1944
- 1 SS propaganda flyer is known to exist "J'accuse les hommes de la Waffen-SS"
- at least 1 propaganda postcard (SS man + worker) exist in french (not including the "Unsere Waffen-SS" serie that was published in french too).

The poster seemed to be real, as the pictures of the SS-Ausbildungslager Sennheim are uncropped or different from the ones available !
