I'd say a fantasy-piece. There are names of SS-divisions on the plate that weren't even invented in the year 1937!

The plate is original but the paintings on the front are of newer date.

I agree with DeMil...old plate with some decal on the front. It would be be worth more with that decal removed.

Doug, I think the whole front of the plate inside of the outer black thin line is a transfer decal, perhaps over fired on the plate or simply applied and dried. The underside of the plate appears authentic to me.

There is some shiny coating on the top of the plate. Perhaps spray on shellac? No doubt a fantasy or tourist piece. Comic book like in design (cluttered) and too flashy for the period.

I think these are painted actually, but still very much post-war. See quite a few of these around with various schemes.

I agree. Bauscher Weiden is a well known SS mess plate manufacturer. There are only 3 that I know of. The other 2 are "Victoria" and "Bohemia" of Chezoslovakia. All is not lost. I recommend putting it in a display frame with the back side facing out.

I think so too, a very nice piece of work.
I asked about this on another forum and someone there said a guy by the name of Chris Farlow [England] was well known to make elaborate drawings like this on plates of political and military subjects in the 70's, does that ring a bell with anyone ?

SS plate

Hi,
I don't know about Chris Farlow's painting talent, his shop was "Call to Arms" in Upper Street, Islington in London. He came to fame as a singer - "Out of Time", a Jagger/Richards song - in the 60's and then went on to his militaria career, back in the days when Rob Tredwen was Rob Taylor and Eddie Kenten ran CW Traders in Camden Passage!
Back in the days when the fantasy etched K98k bayonets first appeared and Tony Oliver's phone number was the maker's code on his SS buckles (at least you knew those were copies!).
Who said "nostalgia ain't what it used to be!".
Funny old hobby isn't it.
