    Field Made Camo Cap Question

A good friend just sent me this cap. It supposedly came from a garage sale, but, of course, the story is free.

The cap is made from zelt material. The vents are made of aluminum with zinc washers. The pattern is unlike the issue caps with the sweat band on the fall side.

Is the camo material original? If not, no further questions are necessary.

Duct tape can't fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound.

The fabric looks original, the construction are close to spec. The venthole washers are not exactly what I would expect from a fieldmade cap, could bee good but other "experts" have to evaluate them. Most fieldmade original caps I have seen have either no ventholes or handsewn. With these caps, its only the provenance and gutfeeling which counts.

From the pictures alone, I would think this cap is a postwar made with original fabric.

            Best regards, Tom

                Cap

Why bother trying to tell if this hat is real. An x-ray machine can do if for you. See the thread about TK x-ray analysis. The wave of the future.

Well either way its not a field made cap. I would say maybe tailor made, but the grommets just arn't what I would expect to see either. It could be legit, lots of collectors pass on pieces like this that are 100% legit due to not being "text book" (what ever in the hell that is I like it, wouldn't pay that much but would look good on some of your amazing SS tunics. If its cheap enough why not. Its original material so there fore at least a representative example. JMHO. Matt

                      X-Ray

                      Bob,
From this point forward, even though I trust your word exclusively, I would like you to pay the $300 Fee for the X-Ray guarantee before I purchase anything. Are you Okay with that?

                        Peter,

First magic wand was the blacklight. Then came someone's idea of a divining pendelum. Now x-ray analysis.

I used to have some confidence in my own judgement. Now I will have to have a dossier of test results. Perhaps the time of dinosaurs, like you and me, who trust our judgement, has come to an end. LOL!!!

For starters Bob, your skull buttons better have .14% manganese. If not, you better pitch em in the trash!

There are many types. Have they all been tested?

Manganese? Well, I never invested in manganese before......

                              All Tested?

                              Bob,
They have not all been tested, but they will in time. If the new expert determines that your skull button falls outside a certain tolerance, better pitch it. Money to the tester, a sale lost for Bob!
