    Dachau pattern Dutch Sleeve Shield

    Hi,

Does anyone know if the final pattern Dutch sleeve shield, the kind found at the Dachau clothing depot, was ever issued to and worn by W-SS toops?

    Thanks,
    Erich

I don´t know what happens with the dutch one, but others like the danish or the latvian were worn in the late war. I suppose the dutch too, but I have not evidence of this.

        Hi Greg,

Thanks for your help. At the late stages of the war photographs were not much or a priority, so I think your right but we'd have to rely on Veterans to remember if they did or not for evidence.

          Hi Askold,

Do you know of any photographs with the shield in wear or have shields like those turned up in the hands of Dutch W-SS Veterans?

          Thanks,
          Erich

            Hi Erich,

I can't think of any period photos of hand, but I've seen photos of original tunics with such shields in other people's collections. Also if you do forum search on the shield, I am sure you'll find a worn example.

              Hello,
imo the Dutch shield "dachau pattern" has never been worn, at least there is no photo showing it in wear and I don't remember untouched tunics with that shield.

I own a shield that "seems to be used" but I don't belive it really was.

              IMHO

              Max

                Dear All,

                IMHO I agree with Max.

As far as I know no photographic proof of this shield in wear.

I remember a M44 jacket from Peter v L with this shield, but if this was original to the jacket....

                Perhaps Cees K knows more.

                Best regards,

                Rene

Max and Rene are absolutely right. The final, so-called 'Dachau pattern', was never issued and worn.

                  With all the best,

                  Cees

Here is a period photo I found in a book of captured Danish SS volunteers wearing the Dachau type shield, thou it is the Danish one I´m sure the Dutch one was worn also. Note the NCO in the 44 tunic with the shield

                          Regards
                          Lars

Very interesting photo Lars! Thank you for sharing it. Although I understand your way of reasoning, I am afraid it is not correct. In the contrary to Regiment "Danmark", the Dutch Brigade was not entitled to wear any national shields. The only Dutch unit wearing national colours was the Freiw. Legion Niederlande, and this unit was disbanded in 1943.

                              With best regards,

                              Cees
