I am much more favorable with those 2nd set of photos. The ring is either an orignal or was detailed cast from a mould made from an original. I'm now in a reverse of my previous opinion and am about 90% leaning toward it being original. Sorry that I can not tell you 100% but I do not feel qualified to judge it the rest of the way given the wear and going from photos. If it is a fake it is the best one that I have seen and unlike any fake that I have seen.
Thanks again for your input !!! I tried to research name and came up with the most likely candidate, Werner Koehl. Koehl is an unusual spelling for the name KOHL in germany, and there are only a few men in the SS with that spelling. However, the TKR box on his Fuhrerstammkarte was not checked. This is not unusual, although there IS an entry in early December '44 for a birth. Interesting history: Served in Freikorps. Awarded SA Treffen Braunschweig badge. Joined Partei in 1935. Served 4 months in Reichsheer 1937. Commissioned as Untersturmfuhrer on 20.4.39 in Allgemeine SS in Standarte 103. Electrician.
You probabaly have the awardee nailed. You may want to post the last set of photos on the GDC HR forum area and get some other opinions. My feeling is if a couple of the regulars can not find a fault with this then is an original. There are several things about this one that I doubt that would be found on a fake.
