    Greatcoat

    Hi,
was checking out a coat on ebay asked for the photographs and this is what I got, the seller says coat and eagle original shoulderboards not. I think its no good the stamping is in wrong place and obviously bogus. Is this some form of reproduction or altered coat? I know its probably a dumb question but if you dont ask you dont learn, Could you point out the flaws or doubts with this coat. The seller has good feedback and simply may not know ,
    anyhow cheers Robert

          looks good

This set looks good to me! Obviously an honest seller, as he is stating that the boards are no good, this is a good sign. The coat, size markings (a little off in layout) and eagle look fine to me! Nick

Hi Robert, I too think the greatcoat is fine.

I must admit I do worry about how easy it is to add an SS sleeve eagle to an otherwise plain Heer greatcoat to transform it into something more valuable and saleable?

            Cheers, Ade.

              Ade,
On my SS Ubermantel, the sleeve lining was added after the Adler had been machine sewn on. To add it post war, the lining would have had to be removed and reinstalled. Now this is not a huge obstacle to overcome but it leaves quite a few areas to indicate tampering.

Were the sleeves lined in the ordinary mantels?? Also, the majority of original Mantels I've seen have been the ones without the french cuff feature. I'm not saying if it has this type of cuff it's fake it seems a large number had no french cuffs.

I agree, AND it's the common, cheap 'shrugging' eagle too ! "Be afraid if it's priced at more than the sum of it's parts. " would be my advice.

                    Ian.
