Russian soldier defended his land/country/family from German invandors, who came to slave and took over the land. Anti-belshevist, anti-Jews campaigns, etc. were not the main reason of Nazi agression. Nazi wanted the world. To reign because they believed they are the best race.
NKVD was a wide term, means not just KGB or Police. Afterall, NKVD or not, they were all simply soldiers fighting for their home.

Mathias,just think what the SS would have done to you if they found a Communist flag or Russian Stars in your home if you were in Germany. Instead of two years in jail you would be in Bergen Belsen or Mathausen doing slave labor or roasting in an oven.

I can and do respect your grandfather for his patriotic defence of his Motherland, a little respect for a man who to the best of my knowledge committed no atrocities and was not directly involved in your grandfathers death, would not go amiss.

Whilst there may not be any of Otto Kumm's relatives participating on the WAF, there are several who knew, met and maybe even deigned to call him friend - and their feelings should also be respected.
