    SS Estonian Sleeve Shield

    Hello,

I've been told this sleeve shield is an early variant used by the SS-Freiwilligen Bataillon Narwa.

Does anyone have any photos of this shield in use?

Also, can anyone give me an estimate on the value of this shield?

    Thanks,
    Erich

I'm NO expert on insignia at all, but I see a few things. For one the top lion's face is a bit deformed, but I don't know if that as anything to do with anything. I have seen I think maybe 4-5 varients of the Estonian sleeve shield, but I have not seen this one. I have seen one that has silver lions that are elevated from the shield.

What year would this be from? I know when the 20.SS-Estonian Division was formed and I can take a look at see if I can find any of these examples on pictures I've seen.

Your best bet would be to talk to the forum member "Sturmmann".

    Hope it helps,
    Mansal

This early pattern shield was used originally by Estonian SchuMa (polizei) troops and is referred to as the Police pattern, but it did find its way in to the Estonian element of the Wiking Division.
Also the Estonian Wehrmacht formation which later transferred to the Waffen SS used it occasionally along side the pattern lacking the lions. If the depicted shield is an original I can't tell for sure but it does look right. Taylor-Bender book Volume 5 (p.218) has a neat picture showing 2 Estonians both wearing this patch. One trooper is WH, the other is SS! Nick

Duct tape can't fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound.

                ETN:

Would it be possible to see a back scan of this shield? It would be great reference, as there are so many copies of this shield floating around.

The Estonian shield shown above is a nice German made original item.
