    Reproduction SS Cap

After the recent and rather unpleasant thread about SS caps I thought it might be refreshing to post a hat that will definitely not separate collectors regarding its authenticity. It is a reproduction cap I bought, innocently, in 1968 towards the start of my SS cap collecting. I'm posting it for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that many collectors think refinement of repros is a relatively recent thing. This cap, which is nowhere the quality of reproductions I saw only a couple of years later in the early seventies, already shows coloured branch piping, a runic stamped interior and a pretty reasonable shape. The badges are now, of course, laughable with current levels of knowledge but at the time were certainly convincing to me with RZM marks and everything. So, think about it, the second reason I post it is because if they were this close at the end of the sixties, well....

The interior's not too bad either. Even at that date they were aware that the soft diamond had to be removed.

      Thank you for posting Derek!
We've all been burned...me on a KZ Frankenstein (which was vetted thanks to you) and an A-SS officer, both back in the '80's. Unfortunately I do not have pics.

One of mine....(among many others) was the SS Panzer 'crush cap' that we all chase!

They were SO good back then that they are part of some (considered

        fine) collections today!

It's unfortunate but as time goes by and the internet continues, coupled with sites like this the area will be cleaned up.

The early FAKES were really good and indeed fooled lots of people...
        Regards,
        Dave

Try and buy one of those old fake crushers at the price of a fake. Id love to have a nice old fake SS white piped crusher of the type with the soldier logo inside but they are as you say sitting in collections being thought of as authentic.

Here's one that I bought for the price of a repro but had hopes it might possibly be original. The trikot, peak and piping are near perfect match, only the interior lets it down.
