Some of these rings have some basis in fact and some are offshoots of something that existed at one time, therefore it could be considered a reproduction. The ring(s) in this thread are reproductions at best and fantasies at the worst. Nice letter, but without the ring to see what Bill Shea is actually referring to it's difficult to determine if the ring in this thread is a reproduction or a fantasy.

The ring in the thread that belongs to the document is the ring on the right. I know as i helped broker the deal to the actual owner of that ring. I acquired it from a fried, i can give names but he is a small collector in my neck of the woods. He purchased it from the vets son along with a bunch of other items. The vets son held out on selling this ring until he absolutly needed the money due to health problems. It was left to him by his father, who traded cigaretts for the ring from a wiking division soldier. The vet was on his way to norway for occupation duty. The vet didn't collect after the war according to his son and had locked all of his war trophies away in the attic. After the vets death the son recieved them and he did some collecting. He has since sold off about 9/10 of his collection and i have had the opportunity to purchase a nice lot of dak items including a choice luft pith helmet from his stuff. I know you SS guys are very set to if its not in a book then its no good, but rings were produced by jewlers through out the war. There is no set DAK rings, as the german army never had an official dak ring, but metal workers made them and they do exist. This really leaves the complete possibility for such items as these wiking division rings to exist. Everyone will make their own opinion about them anywasy. So just wanted to add my 2 cents to the ring. MattComment

the letter from Mr.Shea is very sad. Sad because he has no experience in these pieces to even write a CoA for that ring. So it doesn't look like the repros he's seen since 1976 so its good??
The ring and the design is in fact a fantasy piece. Designed and contracted out to be made by a very early dealer of military in Hollywood CA. in the mid 1960s..Comment

I was tempted to say that I got mine out of a christmas cracker but the truth is it came from a place called The Old Curiosity Shop in Gloucester UK which unashamedly sold repros (largely to the biker crowd) in 1976/77.
I keep it to remind me that all that glitters is not gold!Comment

Eddie, The ring was not produced during the 2nd world war...Roger Steele of Hollywood Military Hobbies had it designed for his shop and contracted it out to be made and sold...Many vets did end up with one, primarily because it was advertised in the Veterans and 'Gentlemen's' magazines..
They were bought, then traded traded off to comrades with interesting war stories etc...With just about 40 years of wear and tear they look very convincing,,but still a fantasy piece...,G.Comment
