The Waffen-SS had an Italian (foreign volunteer) Division. I don't have their history here in front of me but I believe they were formed after the release of Mussolini in 1943 and were manned by Italian Fascists in support of him during the rest of the war -- fighting Italian partisans, etc. I don't believe they were used outside of Italy. Many of the officers and troops used these, as well as ordinary SS insignia. Their collar tabs were exactly the same except on red backing instead of black... not 100% sure... I just posted a picture of some of them in connection with M42 helmets with double decals... hold on and I'll go get the link and post it here...

bottom of page. You can see the SS-styled collar tabs and them wearing the German and Italian helmets but no sleeve eagles are showing...

A fellow has an original Italian SS sleeve eagle listed in the insignia for sale section on E-Stand. This is what an original red one should look like.
There were other versions though and they were worn. Lots of photo evidence
