Mine had black padding, who knows who did it and why red was used, probably to enhance the sinister appeal.

SS Artillery Piped Visor

I'll say this for the Warelics site, referred to below: there is an amazing amount of "rare, stone-mint or EREL" material available. Just down from the panzer-piped W-SS oficer's cap is a similar Pionier version - two examples of perhaps the most controversial, short-lived item in the entire SS cap field, both at hardly that much more than a white-piped standard version. And both have been there for some time. What are the odds??

There is one, apparently genuine, artillery-piped visor photographed in the literature with the red padding behind the TK - but I must ask, most cynically, how difficult would it be to fake this? Given the rarity of the item itself, this would seem a most trivial upgrade, and one hardly likely to affect the value of a genuine example.

About eight years ago, a limited number(at least I think a limited number) of high end reproduction SS visor caps in various branch pipings were brought in to the country by a well known European dealer and sold through his distribution network. This was one of the logos used on these hats. The construction was extremely fine and frankly, takes a hands on examination for a definitive judgement. This was when I got back in to collecting after a 25+ year hiatus and I got sstung on a number of them. At the time, the story was these were coming out of the old Soviet Union. They all had fake insignia, as the insignia was not worth sourcing to make the hat believable. My feeling, without handling the piece. is this is one of that goruping/ I would suggest finding an experioenced veteran collector who knows these fakes and have him take a look at it. As I have mentioned in pas posts, real grtay SS officer's visor hats with white piping are atrue-I mean ture-rarity. Piped hats that are real are nearly non existant.

...more informaton
Bob,
Please advise whom this dealer was that brought these into the US. A PM to you was sent concerning this, but was unanswered.
After examining several Clemens Wagner visors over the past 2 years, noteablely on a very repected site (i.e., Collectors Guild (Heer pipe art visor), as well as member Vaughn O's (Heer piped Cav he has for sale). I do not feel that this cap is not a monkeyed with or reproduction. Details are to exact comparing Heer visors to this visor.
Speaking of PM's, several members have PMed me with things to look for but have been very vague on the details. Comments have been made as to "I don't want the "fakers" to find out what to look for". Upon requesting privately for this information none have answered. Why PM, if correspondence is not going to be returned or if it isn't something that is going to be made public? More over why have a forum to learn if information is going to be "censored" or left out.
Example From PM -- "Please keep this off the forum as it is something fakers are not aware that some visor collectors look for." - Simon L
