I think the tunic is righteous. While I am no expert on these, I base my opinion on the fact that the tunic shows honest wear, not simply being washed several times, had it been from washing, the fading would have been everywhere. You will notice the inside is not faded like the outside. This fact, along with the story leads me to feel this is an honest example albeit not a textbook one. I feel that there are simple explainations for the other inconsistencies.
It would make no sense for someone to gather several original items together so a fake could be slipped in among them and then sold at a fraction of the cost of what the helmet alone would have brought.
I was involved in WW2 reenacting in Texas starting in 1986, in fact I lived in Texas City where these items were acquired, while I was on Galveston Police Department. Janke 44 pattern camos were just beginning to hit the market around that time and were too expensive for most reenactors to get so many wore original tunics (I know that sounds crazy but original tunics were cheaper than Janke made ones at that time) All that I saw had the coarse feel to them, I believe it was mentioned that this one has the correct feel to it.
I don't know the owner even though we obviously lived close to each other at one time so I don't have a dog in this fight and this is simply my opinion.
