Sl.ZF 1 and 1a

I have a question about the Sl.ZF 1 and 1a which was used by the German Stug III (among others).

Usually each German tank gunsight uses triangles, one big in the middle (h=4 mils) and 3 triangles left and right (h=2 mils).

The distance between the triangles is also 4 mils.

At the bottom of this thread you can see a Sl.ZF1 and 1a.

Do they use the same heights for the triangles than the usual TZFs? Or are they twice as big?

Okay my PC game tank simulator (or maybe not) friend, here goes.


First, Barkmann's diagrams and work is not completely accurate. His functional movement is somewhat accurate but his strichplatte is taken straight out of the Tigerfibel, which in and of it self was meant as a charaterization of the reticle, in a cartoon sense, and was never meant to be used to scale, which of course most people never realized through the years.

Think about what these telescopes do. Think about how optical physics and light paths work in nature.

These are two completely different machines. The TZF is a different magnification than the SFlZF. The location of the reticle is in completely different places. The TZF's reticle is located in a place beyond the magnification lens system.

The strich measuring system itself is unchanged. What is changed is the dimensional distance that is evident to the observer due to the increased or decreased magnification levels of the two pieces. Therefore, you see that the strich on the right has 24 messmarke, while the earlier model has 12. They didnt change the SIZE of the triangle. They added greater ACCURACY for the round to be placed at the correct spot at the greater distance when making the estimate. Read the Tigerfibel again. See the pie slice picture? The more marks you have allows you the greater accuracy when planning the spread of the tank's silhouette and figuring out the distance when you know the other two numbers. When you have 24 mark distances, you have double the measurement accuracy way out there in the distance. I used to have a nice picture I developed that illustrated this perfectly.

Bottom line answer, no, the triangles are not larger. It's a hand-drawn picture not meant to be taken literally to scale. See your other question (JEEZ you ask a lot of questions) on the early PaK 38 ZF you asked about. it's three marks of 10 strich. Not too accurate at greater distances, right? Get it? With more advanced propellants there was greater need for accurate markings as the rounds could reach farther and farther distances. Meaning you could now measure something with greater accuracy knowing you could actually hit it that far away with a Pak 40 or higher, once they were introduced.
