It would be a crime to paint it, just use some protective type of paint to keep it from decaying. I really love the look of the Me-109, the battle damage just adds to the history of this awsome plane ! Love it !

I'm assuming this aircraft was from JG 5 "Eismeer"; I believe that they still had some E-model 109's at this late date.
Since I'm in my office, I'm winging it here.
I'm torn between keeping it as found, and doing an authentic, sympathetic restoration.

Nice to see the original yellow paint, I think it is a little too far gone paint work wise, if the paint was in great wartime condition, I would say, leave it, but I personally think for future prosperity of aviation history, part of me leans towards a restoration.

Dear all,
Keep it as found and just preserve it. Everything about this aircraft in its current form speaks to you. If you restore it you lose the original history and it is just a piece of metal. An interesting piece of metal mind!

Just an idea, but please consider two questions.
1. How many WWII aircraft are preserved in their original paintwork (regardless of condition) worldwide?.
2. If we were discussing a helmet with rare original decals in semi-relic condition, how many would opt to repaint it and fit a reproduction liner and strap?.

they restored a hawker hurricane over here a and by the time they have finished their was less then 9% of the original left and a cost of $10 million n.z but it was flying again.

Right, but it's not a helmet, it's a fighter. If possible it should be restored. The rules are different for vehicles as far as I'm concerned. Just an idea but how cool would it be to restore one of these warbirds but just give it a coat of clear topcoat to protect the original paint and markings? That would be something very unique.
BTW, see what Paul Allen did to the FW190 found in a Russian forest? It's great that it's flying again but the repaint IMO has destroyed the very thing that made this 190 so remarkable and fascinating.

I think we'll have to respectfully disagree on this one!. IMO vehicles are an artifact just like any other, my two Dodge WC's which have their original paint and markings and many people seem to find those more interesting than the restored ones.Originally posted by juvatwad View PostComment
