    Hi LW-guys,

where was this person "working"? I´ve never seen such narrow shoulder boards before.

    Cheers!

      Thanks Jesper,

that explains the strange style, it´s a nice portrait, though. It was made in 1940 (dated on the backside).

It is a great studio photo. The shoulder boards are unpipped, as per the regulations. Often, men had their shoulder boards piped, as on my tunic here, but it was contrary to the uniform regulations. Yours is an oberlt equiv as well.

I love that photo. The fact that it is named is even better. If you ever sell, I would be interested.

These men were civilians who were brought into the Luftwaffe because of their civilian trade experience, for the duration of the war. The rank and etc was to be determined based upon this training and education. There were no promotions.

The officer rankings were most likely college degree holders, and filled such positions as engineers, accountants, and etc. The NCO ranked Sonderfuhrers were tradesmen, such as specialized mechanics, machinists, and clerks. They were normally shop formen and etc. These are just a few examples. There were Sonderfuhrer with medical, broadcast media, weapons, legal, and many other specialties.

Also, the "rank" was more of a pay scale indicator. Not a leadership position. They were not ever placed in position of command. Despite the uniform, they were considered to be civilians, not soldiers. I think of them as GS workers with uniforms. Many did not wear a uniform most of the time, although they were to have them.
