    Opinion Needed on Pak40 Round - Re-painted??

    Hey guys...picked this up recently...

for sure no corrosion, damage, or signs of any filler. You can also see the original turning marks in the steel.

    BUT...

I am seeing a grey primer under the black.

Steel Case is the same in condition...near mint . Paint appears to be a matt gold...not the typical brass type plating I normally see.

markings look good...but almost "TOO" good...

    Thoughts?

    Mike

        NOTE:

The greeninsh hue on the steel/brass is green oxidation...not paint.

I have the feeling it has been restored, nicely restored, but unable to confirm just from those pics. Stencils on the shell look really nice, but too nice, as you mentioned.

            Hi Mike-

If not any trouble, would you take a picture of the bottom of the case and post it here?

            Thanks,

            Brian

              Sure!

              Pic attached...

              Plain steel.

probably would have been better if I took it the right way up...haha...

Yep, I've got a sore neck already, so better upside down

Can you scratch the case with your nail a bit? If it is paint, it will peel off...or you might feel the surface is not metal.

                  Hi Carles!

No, it does not peel...and the surface feels like metal.

I have some pictures of something similar to this round, from an old auction, but I cannot find the cable to the digital camera. Should have the cable tomorrow and will then post the pictures.

The red and white paint on the lettering of the projectile looks too bright, and the black paint looks too black to my mind.
I would also say the scratch on the black paint looks too recent.

On the plus side the case looks excellent in the photos and is 3 times the value of the projectile IMHO.
Its worth getting due to the quality of the metal of the case and the projectile , but I would have doubts about 100% originality of the paint.

If you think its been varnished then very definitely worth getting.

                          Thanks Rich...

                          I would agree...

I also have one that is not painted...it is on the estand with some others.

This one seems to have a lacquer...as opposed to a plating.

Photos of a printout of an eBay auction from over ten years ago for something that looks "kind of like" yours. Just FYI. The item came from Europe to the U.S. and vanished... No doubt WA members can offer insight on similarities in stampings on yours and on the auctioned shell.
