Hi,
Asking for a friend, excuse my ignorance here, he has a shell head looking similar to a bofors round but its one piece of metal beyond the copper collar. markings on its side say
SAP 2PR
H3?N
BTH ??N
4/45
The shell base has a cap of thin steel (slight puckering about the base surface/edge ), about an inch deep, on the base of which it has:-
SMK
3 3/4 Oz
I/N
BP2-43
? denotes something too tricky to read.
Would a brass case marked as follows be the suitable cartridge to marry this head to ?
2pr MKIXGUN

G1
1937
Cf
RL
the central part appearing unfired and marked R3 W12/37
Case is a slight taper and about 7inches long (from memory).
Its a tight fit, won't push in easily. No distortion anywhere.
Whats the best way of getting the head in, and should the brass go as far as the copper collar, as there is a 5mm area beyond the cap which appears broader than the copper in places.
Just what does the cross section of the head look like, how did the round work ? What sort of weapon fired it ?
How can he be sure its inert ? That cap denies looking inside the base. something rattles like it is hollow.
It has been suggested to heat up the neck of the brass case then insert the head. Is this a best way and are we talking blow torch or gas ring ? Wil the brass discolor ? What is the best method of getting the shell head in ? I did wonder if a hot brass neck and an unknown shellbase cap were good partners !
What value is this head, he has a pair, and when married to a case, what might be the resulting value ? Apparently 2pdr cases are not commonplace.
