German shell case ID needed please!

    Hello,

I realise that this may be a long shot, but here goes!

I have just obtained a German First war brass shell case, dated 1917,it measures 56cm/22 inches tall, and approx 8.8 cm across the mouth.

Could someone tell me what kind of shell and what calibre it is please?

As I understand, the measurement across the mouth of the case is the calibre, which would mean that it is 8.8 cm/88 mm,I know this calibre existed in ww2,but was it around in the first war?

Sorry for the lack of pictures, but my batteries are on charge!

    All help appreciated!

    Kind regards,
    Andy

      Thanks for that Bodes!

So, sounds like it could be a shell case for the Geschütze 8.8 Kw FlaK.

      Any other opinions?
Hopefully I'll be posting a pic or two later today, off to work now!

      Kind regards,
      Andy

                That's a shellcase for the WW1 german navy 8,8 cm S.K. L/40 and 45.

                  Thanks Z******252;nder!

If it's an Imperial navy shell, shouldn't it be marked on the base with a crown and the letter M?

Can anyone also tell me how common these shell cases are,as it's the first I've seen.

                  Kind regards,
                  Andy

I'm sorry, maybe i described it wrong: the gun was made for the navy, but it was also used for landwarfare as well.

You see them often on fairs in Belgium and france (of course).

Trying to find a shell for it is far more difficult.
