Bought this recently.
These fantastic quality silk embroidery pieces were made in the far east as sovereigns for Western sailors and are known as Trapunto which is Italian for "to quilt.

This particular one was purchased by a sailor of the Cruiser Karlsruhe which had an interesting history.

I've seen a few of these before but there aren't that many still around with the Nazi Swastika untouched. The silk on this one has faded quite a bit but I'm still very happy to have found it. It's a snapshot in time and an example of the quality you could get back then on an average sailors pay. All you can get nowadays is some tacky plastic crap..
If you google Karlsruhe Cruiser, she's a good looking ship and there are pictures of her in all the major ports around the world during her world cruises. Must have been an amazing experience for those young guys.
