My opinion is that it is ok and I have asked him yesterday to put it on hold for me, but have heard nothing back from him yet

Sorry I am late to this but here are a few comments:

            1. The tally is 100% for sure an addition. If you note the rows of dots top and bottom you will realize this tally was mounted at some point apparently to the frame of this cap which is unusual. Usually it is seen with pillowcase tallies. You do not see KM sailor caps with sewn in tallies.

            2. The tally was never worn on any cap IMO, but of course a studio portrait was possible, but I doubt it with this one. The tally is far too long and not at regulation collar length about 100 cms or so.

            3. The eagle might have been original to the cap , you do not know, but it has subsequently been threaded into place. This is common these days since the eagle has a tendency to fall out and if you try to adjust the needle, it will break. Better safe than sorry. I think it was added to the cap with the tally but cannot say for sure of course, just it looks put together.

            All that said,

It is an original KM sailor cap and the type I like very much, meaning the ones with the red lettered tag inside.

So enjoy your cap but to truly enjoy it I would take off that tally as soon as possible and find a nice named ship tally at the proper length and put it on. Please thread the tally correctly at the back of course. The KM tally has very little value IMO, maybe 20-30 dollars, in this condition and with the holes.
