Gentlemen, I'd appreciate your thoughts on this U Boat cap ribbon and hat device. I assume the eagle has simply lost it's gold gilt finish?

No problems, it is a period cellon example from the images.

Cap tally and eagle are original, no doubt

Might be. Need better images of a couple letters to be sure.

Many thanks for your help gentlemen, I hope these images are good enough.
This pair were taken into an antique shop in southern England by relatives of a wartime sailor on HMS Ark Royal. The story they recounted was that the aircraft carrier had taken on board survivors from a U Boat and these were handed over in gratitude. I would have thought the ribbon to have been pre war but stranger things happen at sea. Does anyone recall hearing of such an incident?

                  Hi there,

definately an original, no discussion about that.

I.m.o. it is a metal version.

Sorry, have never heard of such story but as you say: stranger things are happening at sea. Nothing is impossible and for sure every sailor wants to bring a souvenir home ... especially from a sunken UBoat!

Rgds and nice to see such tallies

Very nice example. Really good buy if you purchased.

                      They can get addictive though.
