Thanks for chiming in. I understand your skepticism. But bear with me.

    What we know:

    - The helmet is named to Heinz Voigt
    - There is only ONE file at the RuSA for "Heinz Voigt"
    - That very file from RuSA shows that he went MIA in mid-July 1944
    - That very file shows he was with "Das Reich" which was decimated in mid-July
    - Grabersuche shows an "H.Voigt" with the SS was KIA in mid-July in Normandy
    - The KIA in Grabersuche does show a Sturmmann which is not a match

The question is do you really think there were two guys by the name "H.Voigt", both in the SS, killed on the same date (give or take a couple of days), in the same general area? I may be not be the most objective person on this subject, but THAT sounds pretty far fetched. Just my opinion. And, no, the name "Voigt" is not a common one based on the VERY few entries at RuSA.

    But to each his own!!

The question is: do you want to think its him, or do you want to know its him?
A lot of German soldiers were killed in Normandy in july 1944, and the rank listed by the Volksbund is not a match as you say.
If you want to know, why dont you contact the town hall of his city of birth as I sugested. They will have information on his date of death, perhaps the letter explaining the circumstances of death, etc.

If H Voigt is your man, well he is still missing because as I said that inscription on the Volksbund website does not correspond to an identified soldier.
