Yes, it was a few kilometers from Rossoshka. I think it was called Novo Alexeievka to be more precise. Rossoshka river is in the background.
Some guy came and tried to sell us some helmets, but nobody wanted to buy them. So he go angry, said "fliegen", and tried to throw this helmet into the river. It didnt quite make it though, so I went to get it later on once te guy had left.

Of course I can see the interest in visiting what was the old Russian front, but why on earth would anyone want to keep such a rusty old nik nak like this? It holds nothing to the eye, and should be left with its former owner.
I have an old pot from and a flattened ss mess tin from the former ss buildings at Obersalzberg, but they really cannot be anything more than what they are....rusting metal! (except the alum tin!)

Hi there Robertdmountfor, i think it comes down to personal taste , some like mint tidy helmets for instance while others prefer the rough combat look, and others like the battle field relics .Realy you sum it up yourself with the bits you found in the ss building , why did you keep these items , i would say because of where you discovered them, and the history that goes with them. I collect alot of rusty battle field relics most have no real value other than the value i place on them, because they are found on the battle feild and are part of history to me they are priceless .Thats my personal preference in this awesome hobby , cheers Ironcross1

I do dig for the money, I use the money generated by the relics I sell, to expand my collection of TR medals. But I can sleep comfortably, knowing that in the areas where I'm digging fortunately not a single soldier was killed in combat. In the area I'm digging in, some 40-50K German troops surrendered in may 45, and the entire area is littered with dump holes, some small, some measuring 200 x 200 metres!

I occasionally search battlefields (Ardennes), and I must say that's a completely different experience, still seeing evidence of the fighting around you and knowing a lot of soldiers (about my age), died in these forests.

I know that if I were to discover a field grave, I would do the only right thing: leave it as I found it and report it to the authorities! I feel that these brave soldiers deserve to be re-buried at a war cemetery instead of some anonymus spot in a dark forest and maybe relatives are still alive, who can finally close this chapter in their lives, by knowing where their loved one was found and that he is buried with his comrades now.

As said before in this thread, most of us diggers have good intentions, a few bad guys are spoiling it for the rest of us and destroying our great hobby!

Historic sites

You are completely correct - It is entirely different to actually see the historic sites personally and discover items in the forests or on battlefields.
Items I discovered myself are priceless to me for sure.....

Not comparable to buying a minty helmet and put it on a shelf - this could be interesting though if you receive it with a REAL story from a vet or from someone living close to the battlefields & who kept it since WWII.

I do researches in the Ardennes too - a most interesting experience and very difficult to describe !!
I really prefer the battlefield found items.

I have only gone relic hunting in Narva, Estonia (Auvere battlefield), and I was lucky enough to run into a farmer who let us look on his land. There were remains of a destroyed vehicle close to his field, and he gave me one russian helmet he found while ploughing his potato field. It is a very somber reminder of the fighting that occured there - much blood was shed - a section from the top of the helmet is missing from concussion.
I would love to make it to Russia one day and take battlefield tours!

Very good question, why would somebody keep an old piece of crap like that? In fact, why would anybody even waste time keeping any old crap from the thrid reich era. In my opinion, we should all melt this old stuff down or throw it in the garbadge. Its time to move on and stop being
