How/why would one get the Badge of promotion by merit of war?

Hi Johnz,

a promotion by merit of war is something that usually is seen on Officers.
As in any other army in the world Officers follow a career in which for each rank they reach they have to serve a determined period in it. So a Captain becomes a Major after a certain number of years he served with rank of Captain.
A Major will become a Lt. Colonel after a certain number of years of service.....and so on.
This process is the normal advancement by seniority.

During wartime nevertheless it was possible to advance to the next rank (to be promoted) for having done some particular, outstanding, decisive action or for some particular situation that forces the one or the other to be promoted to the next rank due to command needs.
Often a promotion by war merit comes together with a medal of valor.
