Based on the hat devise (and color) I would say its clearly fire department related...

Yes, not military, in fact it is a Feuerwehr badge issued to the firebrigade of Bozen (Bolzano). This area was part of the OZAV (Operationszone Alpenvorland) and was a practical annexation of the Italian provinces of Bolzano, Trento and Belluno,with military administration of the Third Reich since the Autumn of 1943. That firebrigade badge dates back to the period when Bolzano was part of Austria, till the end of WWI.

The cap is very old for sure: look at how short is the phone number of the maker, only 4 digits!Comment

As far as I know the color of the piping of the Vigili del Fuoco is red. This example has gold piping. Did the Vigili del Fuoco has more piping colors, or did the German influence played a part here?

As previously said this is not a cap issued to the Italian VV.FF., so the German influence

Probably the different piping indicates a different department. The helmet was made in Meran (Merano), 25 Kms northwest of Bolzano.Comment
