"six italians, dressed in rather unusual diving suits and equipped with materials of laughably little cost have swung the military balance of power in the Mediterranean in favour of the Axis".
Hi, I would appreciate very much any opinions on this eagle.
Thanks,
Del
Alas, a repro.
BEVo / machine woven Italian-SS eagles didn't exist. Repros, both on black and red backing, have been kicking around for more than three decades. Actually, the first I hit on was at a garage sale in California in 1980 and I bought for a few bucks. In the '80s you could see these fakes being offered as such in a few mail sale catalogs.
BTW, the embroidery should be of cotton, whereas the backing should be sytnthetic. The same manufacturing details and consistency mark a whole range of repro machine-woven German WW2 insignia made in those days which are well-known to senior (and gray-headed) collectors of the genre.
