Cutoff Volunteer Breast Insignia

Just wanted to show my Cutoff Volunteer Breast insignia and ask for people's opinions. I am showing it in comparison to my hand sewn example.

Appears to be a machine sewed Example and there are remnants of blue threads through some of the holes.

I have been told that there were volunteer uniforms made of a blue wool at one time.
Could this have come from one of those uniforms?
