Cadre (staff) of such Ersatz und Ausbildungs units were not recruits but experienced combat leaders who could have been posted
at such an Ergänzungs-Einheit (Operational training Unit like the "Windhunden EuA") to prep the new 116 members for unit orientation and front line service preparedness.
Such staff personnel would have already earned such a badge while being released from the front (perhaps healing from a wound)
to help train replacements for the unit. That's what I am trying to say.

Great badge and photos. I visited that cemetery a few years ago while touring the Hürtgenwald.

This has certainly evolved into an interesting thread

Now I just need to find a nice pair of wrapper tabs to display with it

                      101st.Abn. & Windhunden

Am pretty sure these guys (116) tangled with the 101st. Abn. during the Bastogne fight.

Interestingly a Bundeswehr unit, I can't recall which one, inherited this tradition badge post-war, and was certainly still using it as late as 1996, but has since been forced to relinquish it, and in it's place adopt a stylised red rose head.
Another recent attempt to eradicate any continuity of tradition between the Bundeswehr and Wehrmacht.
