    Two-tone officer tunic

    Hi guys,

I'm not considering buying this one but I'm still curious to hear your opinion about this tunic. It's sold as a "late war manufactured tunic", which according to the seller explains the two tones.

    Thanks

    Max

it was a waffenrock which was modified for field use, due to cloth shortages towards the end of the war

It does not need to be Late War.

There is a tendency of collectors to think items like this were all made as a result of critical material shortages at the end of the war. while this is true in some cases there often are other explanations that are more likely.

The dyes used in period clothing fade and react to moisture etc. differently. When the jacket was assembled, the lighter colored wool may have matched with the base wool perfectly or at least much more closely. You can see under where the war badges were worn a darker green closer to the base fabric of the Waffenrock material.

This could have been worn from any time from the beginning of the War until the end most likely as a field tunic.

        A very interesting-looking tunic.

Another great feature is the conversion from 8 to 5 buttons. This isn't often seen on converted waffenrocks and one would wonder why bother. The wearer must have been an efficiency nut and wanted to save time buttoning his jacket each morning.

I like the jacket very much.

Great looking tunic! This color fade happened a number of times as I have seen 2 other similar pocket faded tunics lately. From parade to combat, I do like it.

              Max,

I have an early enlisted tunic with similar modifications. Probably more common than you would think.
