    Everyone,

thank you so much for bringing this old thread back up!

Still one of my favorite items - it's raw and speaks truthful to the nature of warfare.

I'm glad this old thread was bumped because I would have probably never seen it and it's very worth reading.

Thanks for posting it Hardy. Truly a gripping piece of history.

        Ausgezeichnet!

Thank you very much for telling the story of Lt. Wahrheit and showing his tunic!
I'm glad he survived the war and went on to have a career, despite his disabilities.
This tunic is evidence of the suffering inherent in war. I read in the extract from his Soldbuch that he also had a through-and through-gunshot wound of the shoulder/upper arm early in the war (1941, IIRC).

Do you have any more information on Lt. Wahrheit after the war? Did he marry?
Have children? I assume he most probably has passed away by now?

I am very glad you are preserving his story with his tunic and insignia, so that
        he won't be forgotten.

Thanks again, and any further information you can share on this brave soldier
        would be very much appreciated!

        Sincerely,
        John

          Hi John,
Thanks for your interest and your kind words!
I do have a lot of Heinrich's documents, pre- and post war. He was an exceptional teacher that earned high praise for his unique ways of engaging his students. Through his career he taught all grades. His last position before retirement was vice-principal at a middle school in southern Germany.
Regarding your other questions: Forgive me John, I don't feel comfortable talking about his family and private life on an open forum.

                Thank you!

                Naxos,

Thank you for the additional information on Lt. Wahrheit's post-war career and
                accomplishments!

"Forgive me John, I don't feel comfortable talking about his family and private life on an open forum."

I understand 100% and fully agree! I sometimes tell about 2 German WW2 veterans I came to know well, and never list their last names, only initials. Even though they are now gone, their names/locations are unique enough that a person could perhaps locate their remaining family. Not that they did anything wrong, but it's just courtesy to respect their privacy.

Again, thanks for sharing this great information and story! This really speaks to me!
                All the best,
                John

Wow, I missed this thread the first two times around. Truly a great read. What an amazing documented piece of history. Plus it ends well as he survived and went on to become a very good teacher by all accounts. I also applaud your efforts to keep and maintain this superb grouping.

                          Naxos,
A really interesting piece of history and great that you could get all the associated belongings as well.
Any idea as to who removed the insignia, or why the insignia was removed, but still kept together with the tunic?
In the old thread you asked should the insignia be restored to the jacket, and like the others said I think it should be left just the way it is now.

                          Thanks for showing us

Since he showed the tunic in history class to his students, Heinrich removed the the eagle (It was required by law after the war).
I believe the collar tabs were removed to clean some of the thick crusted blood off the collar. The tabs show signs of cleaning.

                            Thanks for your interest!
