The battle torn tunic of Lt. Wahrheit

What a sombre yet inspiring historical grouping. It makes you realise how few items that we collect really have an authentic connection to the battlefield, most being the best uniform items left at home. And even with service or combat-worn clothing, most of it will forever remain unidentified. It is nice to hear that Lt. Wahrheit survived and managed to rebuild some kind of life after the war, despite his injuries. It's a miracle he and his uniform made it together.
Thanks for taking the time to post so many pictures and information. In German, of course, Wahrheit means 'truth'. This is certainly one of the most truthful uniforms I have seen that reflects some of the reality of war, even so many years later. It reminds me of the famous cuirass from Waterloo, with a cannon ball hole right through it.

Thank you for showing this interesting piece of history. All too often we forget the real meaning of the items we collect and toss around so frivolously.
Also, it is interesting to see real blood stains. Most of what are reported to be blood stained battlefield relics are, in my opinion, just rust stained relics of the battle of the basement. Which leads me to another point. Someone probably rinsed out the tunic not long after he was wounded to remove most of the blood. Very few people realize how corrosive blood is. If it hadn’t been rinsed rather thoroughly, the blood would probably have done major damage to the wool.
