    Officer's summer white tunic

    Hello,
I got this several years ago from a cloth recycler in the former Sudetenland. It came with the buttons but no insignia, though it had loops for the eagle, ribbon bar and one badge. I finally found a nice set on infantry t-boards. My wife cleaned it and got most of the stains out, though a few are left. It also has a few cuts in the cloth around the eagle area, but they aren't too bad. I've never had it reviewed, so thought I'd put it up while I had a little free time. Sorry for the poor quality of the photos, but it's the best my old camera and lack of photography skills can do!

            Summer White

Tim Curley is a very good source of information on summer white tunics.

Nice early upper quality white jacket with this waffle cloth !
IMO more than a lower OFF grade but a higher one like Major at least ?

You have a nice example of an Army Officer's New Style White tunic.

It looks like your wife did a good job cleaning it up. These tunics were designed with removable buttons and insignia so they could be washed.

Paradoxically, occasionally Officers set up their white tunics with sewn on insignia which would defeat the original intent of having tunics which were easy to clean.

Thanks for the comments. I wasn't really sure whether it was appropriate for a junior LT, but those were the only boards I could find so I went with them.

Great tunic Dale, nothing wrong with having LT boards on this tunic at all. I have a few pics of LTs wearing these type of tunics. Matt

This fabric is called Pique and Pique stoff in German. It is a high quality example and as Matt noted, it could have been worn by any rank of officer.

Thanks again, glad to be able to keep it as is 'cause I don't want to spend more time and money hunting for higher ranking boards!

That's an excellent find and your insignia choices are perfect.

I hope your wife was careful with the washing. I've heard that some detergents turn original tunics into repros !!!!

                            Mike,
My wife is a seamstress and collector of vintage clothing, so I trust her completely. Even if this one glows like a lightbulb now, it's better than the stains that were on it before.

Of course quality cloth jackets could have been worn by junior Lt ,
it was only a bit more expensive at that time to buy
the jacket in piqué cloth !
