Hello,
This is something I found several years ago, when I used to collect bits and pieces of Militaria, mainly from old households.
An original and apparently never (or only very little) used specimen of a "M43" German field-shirt, as they were worn from 1943-1945.
This specimen is made from extremely high-quality fieldgrey (depending on light more grey or greenish) fabric, with a very robust weave ("interwoven ribs"). The material must be cotton, or cotton with some rayon.
Very comfortable and acclimatizing (thick enough to warm, but porous enough to ventilate).
Quite different from the usual thin Popeline or Jersey these fieldshirts were made from.
- two chest pockets with scalloped flaps
- typical 1930-40's large, pointy collar with slits for collar stays - the collar has no top button.
Probably to save buttons. Can be perfectly worn open-collared or closed with a necktie.
- loops and pebbled fieldgrey buttons for shoulder straps
- fieldgrey pressed cardboard buttons
Size Stamp "Gr. 1" below the collar.
It is a rather large size, fitting a EU 52-54 or US/UK 42-44.
The collar has a width of 41-42 cm when worn closed.
Was this a issued piece or privately purchased (I wondered because of the fabric... but then again the stamp would indicate issued piece, right?)
Does anyone know the name for this type of fabric? Was it unusual for Heer shirts?
Your thoughts and comments are appreciated.
Best Regards
