They are fine, there is no one type and there are variations. The tassles are removable for the wearers choice and following regulations. Drum Majors tassles are 7 CM or longer, these are for a regular musician at about 3 CM.

It appears to me that multiple layers of 3cm fringe were "stair-stepped" to achieve the length of that worn by a Bataillonshornist. The practice of wearing the shorter, 3 cm fringe, on Army musician swallows nests - as seen in the Reichsheer - was not continued into the Third Reich. That used by the Reichsheer was generally a much finer diameter. 7 centimeter fringe was supposed to have been used for the Bataillonshornist swallows nests, but I have seen examples where shorter fringe was used.

Regardless of the fringe configuration, it's a beautiful waffenrock!

                          Textbook

"Textbook" Swallows nest for the Bataillonshornist/Stabshornist.... A beautiful set for Mountain Troops that Rove will recognize as I obtained these from him! Still 7 verticals bars...prior to the change to 9, but with aluminum tresse instead of the earlier, silver tresse.

                            Reverse

Reverse...sorry, the backing in reality is field grey. I compressed this photo and, for some reason, it rendered the original color to this!
