The first one is an obergefreiter chevron on hbt, the second one on green wool is a gefreiter chevron.

      Greetings All,

The first one is a typical Obergefreiter chevron used on the drill/work tunic. The second one is a pre 1940 Gefreiter chevron on dark green. Both are Heer.

One more question, What does the tan background on the Obergefreiter Chevron represent? Does the color make it for a tropical tunic?

Also on the Gefreiter chevron, is the reason you know it's pre 1940 is because of the diamond pattern in the tresse?

Tan color is not really tan...not tropical. It's "oatmeal" color which is for the "drillich" HBT uniform as previous posters explained already. (= for fatigue/barracks uniform). Some dealers will claim the black lines on the chevron tresse means its intended for SS... Not sure if that's really true...but the SS tropical chevrons (yellow on black) do have such black lines...
In this case it's probably just highlighted in black to make the chevron stand out more on a light colored backing material!
