Unknown Chevron

This is my first posting under the 'Wehrmacht Uniforms and Insignia Forum' as my collecting line is Wehrmacht medals and awards.

I came across this chevron and although I suspect that it is quite common I must admit that I have no idea what it is or to which branch of the service it belongs to.

Can anyone please enlighten me and secondly, is it genuine?

(Well, that is if it is actually Third Reich to start with.)

Also, does it have any value?

It's a Kriegsmarine sleeve rank patch. Construction and materials appear consistent with the WWII era. Rank was call Gefreiter from 1938 on - before that it was Obermatrose. First rank above basic seaman. Common item.
