Interesting shirt and photo. At first I thought he might be wearing a similar shirt in the photo, but then I realized it appears to be a knit sweater like a "cardigan" tucked into his trousers. Several others appear to wear something similar but untucked. Is this an issue item?

I wonder why they were photographed in the snow, but in shirtsleeves. A warm snap in the winter? Several look a little chilled and ready to go inside.

Good shirt, early collar-less pattern. These were issued for SS. Here are pics of shirt which used to belongs to me:

btw, why are these shirts sooo long??

I wear actually a 2XL and am 6.4 tall...the shirt would go right to my knees!!!
people mostly were smaller back in the days..I guess if you tuck the shirt in your trousers, it cannot be very comfy..so whats the deal with the Length??

I purchased this nearly exact "early service shirt" from the Collecter's Guild,it was the last shirt I have seen in the SS category...All buttons were functional,it was VT I think,I have that put away so I can only reference from memory but it had the standard colar fully attached.Very pointy collar, and a 38 chest.Length...I have always believed the length of these military configurations were to serve as a night-shirt.

Traditionally, since at least the 18th century, shirts were worn very long by the ranks in the US, UK, and in Europe. I've read that it was indeed to be able to use the shirt as a nightshirt, to be able to be bundled up in the kidney area for extra warmth, and to serve as extra fabric for bandages/slings/general use.

You bought the same shirt(my used to have period repair near cuff)

These are rare indeed. As for lenght:- IMHO it is rather mather of the mode. All shirts made till 50's were very long.
