Did not include Nebel as I did not think it was a combat branch of the German Army. The pre-war/early Nebel units used smoke generators and not rocket artillery. It was not until the introduction of the Nebelwerfer late in the war that Nebel units really became combat. Also, most of the nebelwerfer units were converted artillery units I believe.

I disagree, Nebeltuppen in name was a way around the treaty of Versailles, although the Branch included Decon units etc. they were using heavy 10CM mortars with HE in Poland in a close support role with Infantry units and the branch was involved in developing offensive rocket artillery secretly in the 1930s. 15CM Rocket launchers were in the field in later 1940 and 28/32 CM launchers were used first in combat in 1941.

      Johnny R,

The 10cm Nebelwerfer 35 smoke mortar had a max range of 3300 yards. I would not consider that "close support". The 15CM Nebelwerfer "41" was not introduced until "41". According to the original 1944 dated Handbook on The German Armed Forces "made their first appearance in combat in 1941".

Can you identfy which of the three Smoke Battalions particapted in the Poland campaign?

      Thanks,

      MIKE

The 1st and 2nd Nebel Abtelung participated in the Polish Campaign and elements of the Nebel-Lehr- und Versuchs-Abteilung as well as officers from forming units were sent as well. WR 51 was fitted with Nbl. 41 during June and July of 1940 and the first finished field weapons of the Nbl. 41 were produced in March of 1940. The designator 41 was used as the Nbl. 40 was a different system. According to Nebeltruppe veterans HE was used in both Poland and France in support roles. Maximum range does not limit a weapons use for close support especially with mortars, there is no minimum range. I am writing a book on Nebeltruppe.

The sewing on this eagle is very interesting. Do you really think that the hand stitching evident is indicative of a professional tailor? Before you blow a gasket like you normally do before you get suspended let me quote you- "Posted for your consideration" Take it with stride and less superlatives, it gets really boring, your stuff is like our stuff, no better, no worse.
