    unusual model greatcoat

is this greatcoat one of the rarer variants that only had buttons on one side? if so it is the first picture of such a greatcoat ive seen taken during the war. unless of course it is no such thing. in which case, what type of greatcoat is it?

has anyone seen other pics of this rare greatcoat variant? or is this one the only clear shot of such a much heralded item?

      Hi,
my only guess is if the second line of buttons was not removed for any personal purpose..
      Cheers

I agree with Petr. The only coat with one row of buttons known to me was the WWI - Weimar era greatcoat and subsequent sur-coat.

By the way, if you post pictures or scans from a published work, please mention the correct source.

If they're not buttons seen from a different angle, what's in the red circles ?

Knöpfe ?. If the flecks marked with red are indeed buttons, they were certainly repositioned. This is not the normal position for buttons on this type of coat, but who knows. I've seen all sorts of things, and this seems plausible. But according to what I see here on my monitor, I think that the indicated areas just show flecks, probably caused by developing, printing or scanning. Might even be small shades caused by sunshine...

Is it possible the specs on the photo are loose threads because he had to remove the buttons for his tunic or trousers?

i still concur this coat is the single buttoned variety previously mentioned on the forum and still for sale, as far as i know. for non profit research purposes as seen from Waffen im Einsatz ; Bd. 2 .Waffen im Einsatz ISBN 3-932077-23-7 the falshirm shown wears such a coat. i admire forum member attempts, effort and generosity of time in tracing with red pen evidence of buttons previously removed, but i dont personally see them as having been there in the first place either. can anyone include pictures of such a single breasted buttoned coat, taken in such a way that there should be no question of its type, on this thread?

IMO this is a normal coat with the line of buttons removed and the thread visible as suggested above.

if this coat is one with the line of buttons removed, has anyone ever seen another picture of the self same practice, as this was a first for me. anyway, i wouldnt have thought soldiers on duty were at liberty to start vandalizing their uniforms for spare buttons. he isnt a reenactor. if this para is wearing a vandalised normal greatcoat, then as far as i know, there isnt one certain period picture of this special single button row type of greatcoat forthcoming on this forum.

I am guessing you have never been in the military.

We modified everything they gave us for actual operations. Aside from a good source for extra buttons in the field loose buttons klinking on a gun barrel or catching on brush etc. can end your life in a heartbeat.
