HI, I recently obtained some buttons and insignia from a write off KM tunic, can anybody tell me the rank and what the trade badge indicates, also if the buttons are KM or mercantile marine? Cheers, Rick

Rank of Korvettenkapitän (Commander - U.S. equivalent) of Engineering. Shame that the tunic was lost.

The eagle is white from the scan which suggests that this was an administrative in their duties.
The insignia is one that would be worn on the upper sleeve. The one in question is of a Machinen Engine personnel. I believe your example is from an enlisted uniform.

The buttons I believe are genuine.

engineer trade insignia

What's the size of the engineer insignia? It looks small in the photo to me, and therefore more like the small trade insignia normally mounted just above the sleeve stripes on officers' tunics. But if it's from your Korvettenkapitän's sleeve fragments it seems odd that they would remove them rather than just cut the sleeves off a bit higher to include them.
Also, I wonder how often an engineer would be promoted to a Field Grade Officer rank like Korvettenkapitän? Seems odd to me but then again, there are probably many more knowledgable on this point than I.
