    Kriegsmarine buttons - what uniform?

What type of uniform what these buttons have gone on and would they be officer or all ranks? Also, some of the buttons have kind of like a notch machined into the reverse side? Does this signify anything specific? Cheers, Torsten.

What diameter are these buttons? That will help determine what tunic/jacket they would go on. 17mm were for shoulder strap buttons, 19mm were for coastal tunics and great coats, 21mm were for peacoats. Not sure what size were on the reefer/officers jackets probably 19mm. The buttons with the groove were for the left side of the jacket and the ones with the longer shank were for the right side of the jacket. The short shank or ones with the groove were used on the left side so they would sit flush with the surface of the jacket, where the long shank ones were ment to go through the button holes.

Hi there, thanks for your explanation. I am not home at the moment, but will measure the buttons at the weekend and post here. Cheers, Torsten.
