Vets with a doctorate were given the prefix "Dr". I have records of numerous doctors getting the German Cross for bravery under fire.

In Germany, there are a number of disciplines that can be rewarded with the title "Doctor".

I know a vineyard owner who wrote his doctoral thesis on vine trellising and was awarded a doctorate degree. It is probably akin to a masters or so here in USA.

Correct. Oberarzt would be Oberveterin******228;r in the Veterinary troops. Both could have a Dr. degree, first would be Dr. med. the other Dr. vet.

Not only in Germany, but anywhere in the world.

Generaly speaking, a "doctor" is the highest degree that can be achieved thru studies at a university. Therefore, a "doctor" from an accredited university is not akin to a "master", which at least in the US academic system is the next lowest degree, but much higher.

Comparison of degrees ain't gonna help here. Fact is we have a Dr. of human medicine wearing Pz. piping which to me makes no sense. Unless he was a tank healer

A person with a degree non medical would not be called an Oberarzt. Oberarzt is a Chief Doctor.

                  I googled "Twardy Wehrmacht"

Twardy is a very unusual name and I got this from a website in German Iam going to have my girlfriend translate, here is an exerpt

                  http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...heiten17-R.htm

Here is a quote from a 1941 Officer Calender with an attempt at a quick translation:

"... Medical Officers, Veterinary Officers, and Officers (W) form independent Officer Groups; therefore, they wear the uniforms specified for their Groups also when serving in a regular position with the O.K.W., O.K.H., etc. ..."

Since O.K.W., O.K.H., etc. beats any Panzer formation I would have a hard time believing the above match of insignia.

One could speculate that the Dr., later in his carrier, decided to become a regular Pz. officer. But that's very unlikely, and still doesn't explain the presence of the caduceus on the boards.

Is "Sanka" an abbreviation for "Sani" or is it some sort of vehicle?

I would say 98% That the Dr Twardy in the Lexicon the Wehrmacht is the guy. I googled Dr Twardy with out search word Wehrmacht and I only get 4 pages and the man is a Professor Doctor here at the University of K******246;ln. I believe the latter is not our guy, he would be far to old.

Also it appears the had no Vets?

                            Hi

It will be worthed to try to get his military records. Was the 17 Infantry Regiment converted to panzer?. Here in the USA you could get for a fee some records at the NARA
                            http://www.archives.gov/

It is a gamble as they only have records of the Army soldiers that survived the war and sometimes the records are incomplete I would suggest for you to contact Robert Ruzzier at
                            soldat4@cox.net

I had been able to research several tunics form him including the one below

                            http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=piped+pioneer

As you are in Germany, you may be able to research it yourself
                            regards

                            Juan

Well, at least its not a hard name to track down Juan. If records exist it wouldnt be difficult.
