Very interesting tunic. I think it would be unusual for an Obergefreiter to wear a private purchase tunic of this type, but I suppose not impossible. I would like to see pictures of the lining if possible out of curiosity.

This is an unteroffizier, (different rank) so they would have been tolerated wearing tailored garments like this one. The French cuffs are interesting as we're not dealing with officer rank or "der Spiess"!

Will, thanks for posting the additional photos. They are a surprise, not what I expected to see. The stamps inside look like those inside a factory made issue tunic, I have not seen this in a private purchase piece before. This tunic is something of a mystery to me.

Nick, my comment about the Obergefreiter rank is based on the clear evidence of a sleeve rank chevron visible in one of the pictures. It seems obvious that the owner of this tunic did wear it before his promotion to Unteroffizier.

About the markings Chris, I quite agree with you and I intended to mention them in this thread. (but forgot) Actually, this tunic has been on a chest mannequin for a number of years now and I only removed it last night to photograph the interior. In fact it has been so long that I had forgotten they were there. I only remebered when I saw them.

Thank you Shawn I do like it myself. Nothing subdued about this puppy, it looks sharp and must have been made to impress. My guess (and that is all it is) is that it could have been made to order for an NCO and worn for garrison duty as it seems somewhat unsuited for the rough and tumble of the field. I am sure it would have stood apart from the standard tunics worn by the rank and file in any event.
