Luftwaffe Tuchrock versus Waffenrock

Hi,

I am starting this thread for the sake of clarification...

The Tuchrock was made an issued until 1938, where it was to be replaced by the Waffenrock(which was SUPPOSED to replace the Fliegerbluse as well).

Well, from what I understand is that the collars on the Tuchrock were piped with a cord colored to the waffenfarbe of the wearer(in the case of the EM tunics). I also understood that the collars of the EM waffenrocks were also piped for a certain amount to time as well.

My question is, are there any specific subvariations of the Tuchrock that were made to be unpiped?

Here is my example... note the lack of the neck fastening clip. This is definately a Tuchrock, but the collar is not piped.

Paul, you are correct that the LW Waffenrock (uniform tunic) was intended to replace both the Fliegerbluse and Tuchrock (service tunic) as a generic dress and field uniform, but this never happened. The Waffenrock and the Tuchrock can both be found with branch piping around the collar if these are early tunics...but war time versions won't have the additional branch piping if we're talking about waffenrocks (introduced in November of '38 and issued thru-out the war, unlike Tuchrocks which are pre-war garments... Unique to the Waffenrock tunics is the feature that it could be worn open and closed with a neck closure tab. This was lacking on the Tuchrock which was always worn open, as shown with your examples. Here is a picture of my war time dated Waffenrock, here buttoned up with closed neck (and combat gear) with LW fielddivision tabs, lacking the collar piping seen on pre-war tunics. But...

Is it true that all tuchrocks were prewar? Was the manufactoring of the tuchrock stopped when the waffenrock was placed into production, or was it made throughout the war?

I am just trying to figure out why the piping would not be present on a potentially pre war tunic. I did not know that the Tuchrock had more than one major type or variation.

I have had the Medical tuchrock for about three years now. It was one of my Per Diem/Hostile fire pay purchases from my deployment overseas. I got it from the Collector's Guild. I love it!

My understanding is that enlisted LW Tuchrocks were regulation issue pre war ("peace time") dress garments, (later abolished) and these always came with branch piping on the collar and the LW Waffenrocks could have the piping (early ones 38-40) but later this was eliminated, like with fliegerblouses of war time issuance also later lacking this piping...Your Tuchrock I believe should have had the branch piping on the collar lapels if its an issue piece, but perhaps its a private purchase (privately tailored) uniform and therefor made with out the piping in accordance with later regulations, like you see with fliegerblouses... Hi Nick,

I will take a look at the inside again to see if the liner is marked with anything(I have forgotten) and post the photos here. I think that it is an issue piece. It is constructed from wool.

Questions on Luftwaffe Waffenrocks and Tuchrocks

Gentlemen,

I have some questions for you about Luftwaffe Waffenrocks and Tuchrocks.

I have seen that in the Heer Battle Shields, Campaign Cuff Titles, Unit Cuff Titles, and Tank/Aircraft Destruction Badges were only worn on the Service Tunics and Combat Tunics and that cuff titles were worn on the Greatcoat. Is this the same in the Luftwaffe? I guess in the long run I want to know if these things were worn on the Parade Dress Waffenrock, Evening Mess Dress Uniform, and Dress Uniform Tuchrock? I know they were worn on the Service Dress Tuchrock and the Field/Flight tunic, the Fliegerbluse. I have looked and looked for this information all over the net and cannot find anything.
