Help Identifying Camo(Newb Question)

Hi there,

I came across this camo just by chance yesterday while at my Wifes Grandmothers, she asked me to bring the jacket and pants up from the basement. Apparently it was in her first husbands foot locker when it was sent to her when he passed in Feb 44, he was a GI.
Any help identifying the uniform would be a great help.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

It is the winter reversible uniform worn by the Heer and the Luftwaffe. The camo pattern is known as "Sumpfmuster" or "Marsh" or "Tan water pattern".

Have a look under the front wind closure flap. There may well be a date and manufacturer's "RB" number

My wifes grandmother told me that this came back in her husbands footlocker, and apart from some small staining on the snow side, the wood camo is almost perfect. What are the chances that this has never been worn and is it normal for US troops to take these as trophys?

I'm just trying to figure out how he could have come by it and how the condition is imaculate in nearly 70yrs.

Yes on the camo right side flap close to the first or second button hole there usually is an ink stamping either a manufacturer of some sort or a number starting something like this RBNr. O/000/0000 You should also look around the pants the Germans like to mark all there things.

Hi, the date / maker details can be found under the wind flap about 6 inches down from the neck on the camo side.

US GI's took anything and everything as trophies! Unlike us poor Brit's, your forefather's could legally ship things home.

Good storage and little or no wear to an item can make things seem as though they were "made yesterday".

Given your relatives date of death, I would expect he served in Italy? I know any details of his service would be of interest to the forum.

Lot's of camo cloth returned from Vets...Most probably saw a use for it such as to wear hunting.(ducks,deer etc) Looks like a nice set.


I recently saw a Tan/Water para smock that a Vet brought home and wore hunting. Much to my surprise he never removed the eagle.

Ade is right on the pants, but the jacket shows the very rare "splinter-pattern in reversed colours"..

When I first saw it my impression was reversed camo as well. Very nice find indeed!!!!!!!

I think he died in Mount Casino(sp), not sure I'll confirm with granny.

I'm actually an Ex-pat, my grandfather was a rear gunner in the 486th, 833rd Heavy Bombardment Group, he was one of those 'Over Here, Over Paid and Over Sexed', I've been over here ten trs, I'm orginally from West London, born in Middlesex Hospital in Isleworth.

As far as my wifes grandmothers first husband here are a few more badges, pins and pics.

Actually from the few examples I have seen they are located at the top, also checked my examples and they are there. But it may vary.

It's not mine to part with, it belongs to my wifes grandmother, and as it was her first husbands(they had no kids as he died in action and only married a year) she may actually give it to the historical society, but I'm hoping she will send them my way. If she does I will not part with them.

Gran Sasso you're right! It's reversed color splitertarnmuster winter camo set ( both of them , pants and jacket are reversed colors ). Very rare item in this type of camo !!!! And very good condition !!! I hope you will get it Geezah !!!! I love that type of camo .maybe someday I will get one set of this to my collection. Who knows ?!

Thanks guys for all your responses, I was over tonight but we did not eat that is tomorrow. I did not have the camera with me which I regrat as she brought out more items from her second husband who was over in Germany.
I will have a few more goodies to post over the next couple of days

I'm not sure if she will they will come my way, I can only hope but I doubt it.
