I believe this is a pre-war Dutch jacket period converted for German use.

its a nice, probably early/mid 1930s German issue summer field service type tunic. These are not common they date from the Reichswehr period in origin and were up-dated in the early 3rd Reich period with the national emblem and other insignia details.

          Nice tunic-difficult to find.

Nick, HBT is just the type of cloth used in making the tunic such as wool. this is as stated above- a summer light weight tuinc. the wool version is ofcourse the heavier style you commonly see. I cant give a as I dont collect this style of tunic. once again, Im not stating it is bad, just that I dont do any resaerch on them. therefore Im not in a place to put in a comment. Glenn

I was wrong in thinking it was a Dutch tunic, though those look somewhat similar. The cut is the standard German Reichswehr-era cut. The material is not HBT (Herringbone Twill) but looks like a canvas or cotton drill material (?). I have never seen a tunic exactly like this and defer to the opinion of phild who must have more experience with these pre-war summer tunics than I. In any event, it does appear to me to be a period tunic and not postwar or reproduction, in my opinion.

My opinion..pictures are not detailed enough...second..be extremely careful with HBT...French knockoffs are approaching near perfection..and I would not buy anything HBT (save possibly SS) without a hands on inspection...proof positive lies in the smallest of details which I believe must be fleshed out in hand...I've looked at pieces which appear to be good..but upon closer inspection are lacking...best I can offer.

I agree with Scott's comments on todays fakes using HBT, but this tunic is not HBT. It is what is often called "moleskin" and was the material often used on these type tunics from the pre-war period. I think the material held up and looked much better than HBT. Basically this same type of material, but in different colors than this, were used in all BW summer uniforms at least thru the early 90s and maybe still today.

The photos are not good enough for me to give you an opinion on the insignia or it's attachment, but I feel very comfortable in saying that the tunic itself is original and what I described in my first post.
