Large flags and long banners are hard to display. I believe that’s why they are cheaper.

I agree. You just end up storing a bale of cloth. But when you bring it out, you can’t argue with the cool factor!

"Purchased my first military flag, a 50x85cm German War flag
[RKF] , for $20 back in 1970 from a WW2 US Army Colonel
who said he got it from the sub-pens at Brest France after his
244mm Artillery unit finished their bombardment of same. More
recently, at last Sunday's (3/18/07) Napredak Hall San Jose
Militaria Show, I was again pleased to be able to pickup for $18
a Number 12 size (16x30 inch) US Naval Battle Ensign made at
the USN Mare Island Navy Yard in 1944. These two flags now
make for an interesting pair of U/E-Boat and Sub/PT Boat size
flags, althought acquired some 37 years apart. Both of these
flags are examples of the smallest official issue naval battleflags
          used during WW2."

I just sold a 300by500 sized one in a very much field repaired and shortened (side to side) condition, it had a halyard running through the entire top edge of the flag and many repairs and mods. Here are the photos of it. For me, a ship's flag but I have no proof of that but in my opinion if a flag flew over an installation and it wore out they would simply throw it away and replace it. Sailors being a superstitious lot would not give up their good luck charm. This one was about 9 feet by 12 feet. It was listed on the estand and sold quickly.
