Thunderbolt use example from the Ancient Roman times.
Sadly no Roman Legion Eagles are known, by me, to have
survived intact into modern times, save for those carved in
stone. Another favorite version is on old German Army flags.

In 1996, in San Francisco, the massive private collection of
Charles Bremner Hogg Jackson was auctioned off. It had been
a bequest to The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of
American History. But this European object collection did not
meet the American museums collection appropriate criteria.
So it was sold at public auction. Jackson had stored it in his barn.
The collection was unknown to his neighbors or collectors, other
than he occasionally fired off his cannon outside the barn. In the
end his collection became the proverbial "out of the blue" gift to
the Smithsonian. See t=692584 about giving to museums.

Also in the 1996 San Francisco auction of the Jackson collection
was a Louis Napoleon Eagle, listed as item #3607. This eagle was
catalog estimated to bring $500/$1000, but went unsold. I called
the auction house, and they accepted my post auction $650 offer,
which was also fax confirmed. But when I showed up the next day
to pay for and pick up the eagle I was told "it has already been sold
to someone else". Needless to say, I never did business again
with that firm. Sour grapes I know, but IMO a deal should be a deal.

Another favorite post 1996 acquired Napoleonic Eagle.
Just like my "N III" (#47) version, but this one being
an earlier "L N" (Louis Napoleon) lettered box below.
Also shown in eagle group post #33 with the label #44.

IMO, your post #39 tassels are Italian, as shown
in the Brisone flag book (ISBN 88-7133-245-8)
on page 46 (banner #64), page 61 (banner #85),
page 73 (banner #97), page 110 (banner #178),
page 152 (banner #287), and more. French flags
likewise used crevats, rather than cord/tassels.

auction loss motivates new acquistions ...

After my 1996 auction lost eagle (post #33 ), I was further
motivated onto new acquistions, such as OFW #43 & #48
(post 33b), & as previously shown in this thread in post #15,
now identified as "L.N" (#43) and "N.III" (#48) versions.
These IMO are superb examples of repoussé art work.

In 40+ years I've only seen three original
Napoleonic 1st Empire Eagles for sale. On
the 2nd Empire Eagles, from time to time
some come on the collecting market, as
there were many more versions beyond
the 1st Empire types shown, i.e., post #1.
